NYC Mayor Adopts Divisive Antisemitism Definition Before Key Election

by admin477351

Eric Adams made a significant policy announcement this week by signing an executive order that requires all New York City agencies to use the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s working definition of antisemitism. The signing ceremony at a Manhattan synagogue highlighted the mayor’s attempt to position himself as a defender of the Jewish community ahead of the upcoming primary election.
The definition has drawn criticism from civil liberties groups who argue that its accompanying examples could be weaponized against legitimate criticism of Israeli government policies. Particularly contentious are clauses that label questioning Israel’s right to exist or holding Israel to different standards as forms of antisemitism. Notably, the definition’s lead author has publicly warned against using it to stifle free expression.
Adams’ decision comes as he faces significant political challenges, including federal bribery allegations and strong primary opposition. His rivals present starkly different approaches to Middle East issues: Andrew Cuomo has demonstrated unwavering support for Israel, while Zohran Mamdani advocates for Palestinian rights and has called for Netanyahu’s arrest if he visits New York City.
