A senior Trump administration official has put the brakes on talk of an imminent presidential summit, stating Tuesday there are “no plans for President Trump to meet with President Putin in the immediate future.”
This directly counters President Trump’s announcement last week. Following a call with Putin, Trump posted on social media that he would meet the Russian leader in Budapest within two weeks.
That post led to a “productive” call on Monday between Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov to discuss the summit.
However, the anonymous official clarified that no in-person meeting between the diplomats was “necessary” following their call, and no presidential meeting was on the schedule.
The Kremlin confirmed this development, stating there is “no precise timeframe” for a summit. This reversal comes as Trump was also scheduled to meet Ukraine’s president to discuss providing US-made Tomahawk missiles.
