Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has called on Greece to refrain from actions that could heighten regional tensions, expressing concerns over Athens’ expanding defense collaboration with Israel. Fidan emphasized that while Türkiye seeks to maintain amicable relations with Greece, it expects Athens to be mindful of security considerations, particularly regarding military cooperation with Israel and the deployment of military assets on the Aegean islands, which Türkiye believes should remain demilitarized.
The relationship between Greece and Türkiye has seen efforts at improvement, yet unresolved disputes over maritime boundaries, territorial waters, and the military status of Aegean islands continue to pose challenges. Greece maintains that its defense initiatives, including those involving Israel, are necessary for safeguarding its sovereignty and addressing security concerns.
In addition to the situation with Greece, Fidan criticized Israel’s actions in Syria, labeling them as potentially destabilizing for the region. He reiterated Türkiye’s support for Syria’s endeavors to achieve security, governance, and economic development, advocating for the resolution of regional disputes through diplomatic channels.
Fidan also highlighted ongoing regional security cooperation involving Türkiye, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan. He noted that these nations are working on structuring their emerging security partnership and exploring avenues for expanded collaboration. Türkiye remains committed to regional coordination on security matters, including issues related to Yemen and threats to Saudi Arabia, with a focus on diplomatic efforts and regional stability.
