Greece has ramped up its diplomatic activities at the United Nations General Assembly, with Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis engaging in several high-level discussions centered around regional security, maritime safety, and international cooperation. Gerapetritis emphasized the significance of these discussions, especially during a time of ongoing conflicts and instability in the Middle East, as Greece and Cyprus strengthen their regional partnerships.
Among the key diplomatic activities, Gerapetritis participated in trilateral discussions with Cyprus, Jordan, and Egypt. He also held bilateral meetings with foreign ministers from various countries, including India, Brazil, and Eritrea. These dialogues are part of Greece’s broader effort to address regional challenges and enhance multilateral cooperation.
In a joint endeavor with India, Greece co-hosted a high-level event focusing on artificial intelligence and emerging technologies, particularly in their application to shipping, maritime security, and freedom of navigation. This aligns with Greece’s role as a major global player in shipping, highlighting the importance of protecting maritime routes and ensuring the smooth movement of goods.
As Greece prepares to assume the rotating presidency of the United Nations Security Council in October, Gerapetritis noted that this period will be pivotal. The presidency coincides with ongoing armed conflicts and international crises, as well as the selection process for the next UN Secretary-General. This will mark Greece’s second presidency during its current two-year term on the Council.
Greece’s agenda at the General Assembly also includes discussions on pressing global issues such as the war in Ukraine, developments in Sub-Saharan Africa, UN reform, and the strengthening of multilateral cooperation. Through these engagements, Greece aims to assert its role in addressing international challenges and fostering cooperative solutions.
