Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced that the European Commission is open to considering Greece’s proposals for increased temporary fiscal flexibility to address the challenges posed by rising energy costs. However, he tempered expectations, noting that significant financial relief from the European Union should not be anticipated.
Following a meeting with EU leaders in Brussels, Mitsotakis highlighted the importance of maintaining fiscal discipline to safeguard the economic progress Greece has achieved since its financial crisis. He ruled out the possibility of implementing large-scale spending measures that might be seen as efforts to gain political favor.
In response to the escalating energy prices and the overall cost of living, the Greek government has introduced subsidies to alleviate the financial burden on households. Mitsotakis is advocating for additional leeway to implement targeted and temporary support measures within Greece’s fiscal constraints.
Mitsotakis emphasized that Greece would continue tackling the energy crisis through measures that are financially sustainable for the country while seeking increased flexibility from European institutions to offer further support if necessary.
