On October 1, Greece assumed the rotating presidency of the United Nations Security Council, marking its second and final term during its 2025-26 tenure as an elected member. Ambassador Aglaia Balta, Greece’s Permanent Representative to the UN, will lead the 15-member council throughout the month.
The Security Council is set to address numerous pressing international issues, including the ongoing war in Ukraine, the escalating situation in Gaza, heightened tensions involving Iran and the Strait of Hormuz, the persistent conflict in Sudan, and the security crisis in Haiti. These discussions are critical as the council navigates complex geopolitical landscapes and seeks solutions to these global conflicts.
In Haiti, the Security Council remains actively involved, focusing on efforts to curb armed violence ahead of the country’s elections. An international security force is supporting these initiatives, aiming to stabilize the situation and facilitate a peaceful transition.
Greece’s presidency coincides with an important period for the United Nations, as discussions regarding the selection of the next UN secretary-general are underway. The Security Council plays a pivotal role in recommending a candidate to the General Assembly, with the new secretary-general scheduled to take office on January 1, 2027.
