Hungary’s FIDESZ–KDNP members in the European Parliament have criticized the European Commission for its silence regarding recent constitutional and political shifts in Hungary, which they claim threaten democratic institutions. The delegation, composed of MEPs Tamás Deutsch, Csaba Dömötör, and András László, has urged the Commission to address concerns related to constitutional amendments, political competition restrictions, changes in parliamentary mandates, and the autonomy of state institutions.
During a joint session of the European Parliament’s Committees on Budgets and Budgetary Control, the Hungarian lawmakers highlighted that the Commission had previously expressed worries over the rule of law in Hungary and had withheld EU funding as a result. However, the delegation pointed out that the Commission has yet to respond to the latest political developments in the country. They questioned whether the recent constitutional changes align with the democratic standards upheld by Europe.
The FIDESZ–KDNP representatives emphasized that democratic principles should be consistently applied across all European Union member states. Despite raising these issues during the hearing, the Commission’s representatives did not offer detailed responses to the inquiries put forth by the Hungarian delegation.
This silence from the European Commission comes amid ongoing concerns about the state of democracy in Hungary. The delegation’s appeal underscores a broader debate within the EU about maintaining uniform democratic standards. The FIDESZ–KDNP members are seeking clear communication and action from the Commission to address what they perceive as significant challenges to democratic governance in Hungary.
