Google is set to implement a significant change in how Android device backups are managed by counting them against the free cloud storage that comes with every Google Account. At present, backups for Android devices, which include SMS messages, call history, device settings, and app data, do not consume the 15GB of free storage shared across Google Drive, Gmail, and Google Photos. However, an upcoming update will see these backups included in the total storage calculation.
This policy change is anticipated to take effect in the coming weeks. According to Google, the typical Android backup will increase storage usage by approximately 40MB. For users nearing or exceeding their storage limit, this change might necessitate freeing up space or opting for a Google One subscription. If an account runs out of available storage, automatic device backups will be paused until additional space is made available.
In addition to altering storage policies, Google is reportedly working on developing more detailed backup controls. These enhancements will allow users to select which apps and types of data they wish to back up. This added flexibility is designed to help users manage their backup size more effectively and provide greater control over their cloud storage usage.
