At the European Council summit, significant attention was directed towards Ukraine’s journey to European Union membership, a topic that dominated discussions alongside sanctions policy and the EU’s broader economic challenges, according to Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar. He noted that the summit’s concluding statement on Ukraine adhered strictly to language previously agreed upon by all EU member states. Additionally, a proposal designed to hasten Ukraine’s accession process was removed after thorough consultations among the member countries.
The debate over Ukraine’s EU membership continues to stir within the bloc, with varying opinions on the pace of the accession process and its potential economic repercussions. Some member states have expressed concerns regarding the rapid entry and the implications it might have on the EU’s economic landscape.
During the summit, Prime Minister Magyar engaged in discussions with European Parliament President Roberta Metsola, where Hungary’s ongoing Article 7 procedure and other EU-related matters were addressed. Magyar also conducted meetings with Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico and took part in discussions involving leaders from the Visegrád Group, an alliance of Central European nations.
The Hungarian Prime Minister highlighted the necessity of reinvigorating cooperation among the Visegrád countries, underscoring plans for continued regional talks to be held in Hungary. Meanwhile, EU leaders are set to proceed with negotiations concerning the bloc’s long-term budget framework, which will cover the period from 2028 to 2034.
