The recent state visit of UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan to Germany underscores the strengthening strategic partnership between the United Arab Emirates and Germany. This relationship, which began with the establishment of diplomatic ties in 1972, has evolved considerably over the decades, encompassing political, economic, energy, and cultural collaboration.
Trade and investment have emerged as central components of this bilateral cooperation, with trade between the two nations surpassing Dh57 billion ($15.52 billion) last year. This makes the UAE Germany’s leading trading partner within the Gulf region. The UAE hosts around 2,000 German companies, including industry giants like BMW, Siemens, ThyssenKrupp, and Deutsche Bahn, reflecting the robust economic ties between the countries.
Energy cooperation forms another critical area of partnership. In 2022, the UAE and Germany signed an agreement aimed at enhancing energy security and industrial collaboration. This includes the supply of UAE liquefied natural gas to Germany and joint ventures focused on clean energy and climate initiatives. Both nations are committed to working together on renewable energy, climate action, decarbonisation, and ensuring energy security.
Beyond trade and energy, the UAE and Germany have also fostered long-standing collaborations in research, technology, infrastructure, and cultural exchanges. Their political relationship was further cemented in 2004 with a strategic partnership agreement covering regional security, economic cooperation, and research, highlighting the depth and breadth of their ties.
Despite facing global political and economic challenges, the relationship between the UAE and Germany remains robust. Both countries are committed to expanding their cooperation across various strategic sectors, demonstrating the resilience and adaptability of their partnership.
